TOYOTA UNVEILS THE COROLLA EV—AND IT’S TAKING DEAD AIM AT THE MODEL 3

The Toyota Corolla, a name synonymous with reliability and mass appeal for over half a century, is entering a bold new era as it goes electric. After 50 years of ruling the internal combustion engine market, the world’s best-selling compact car is about to be reborn for the EV age.

Electric vehicle media outlet Electrek reported on Monday that Toyota will unveil the Corolla EV at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show. This marks one of the brand’s most significant transitions yet, signaling Toyota’s intention to electrify even its most iconic nameplates.

The Corolla EV distinguishes itself from its gasoline counterpart with a closed grille, front-mounted charging port, and smoother body lines that improve aerodynamics. Its overall silhouette bears resemblance to the BYD-powered bZ3 sedan already sold in China, hinting at Toyota’s collaborative approach to entering the high-volume electric sedan segment.

Despite losing the global sales crown to the Tesla Model Y in 2023, the Corolla remains a powerhouse with millions of units sold worldwide each year. Its shift to electric propulsion isn’t just an update—it’s a statement that Toyota plans to compete head-on in the next generation of global mobility.

Toyota won’t be abandoning its roots, though. The automaker will continue producing hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion versions alongside the new Corolla EV. Joining the brand’s growing electric lineup—which already includes the bZ4X, C-HR+, and Urban Cruiser—the Corolla EV represents Toyota’s strategy of evolution, not revolution, as it drives into the future.
