Hyundai and Kia set new U.S. monthly sales records in August with 179,455 vehicles sold, a 10.9% increase year-over-year. Eco-friendly sales reached 49,996 units, up 51.8%, including a record 16,102 EVs.

Analysts attribute the surge to strong safety ratings, product appeal, and a pre-subsidy demand spike ahead of the U.S. program’s end in late September. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 led EV performance with 7,773 units, built on the E-GMP platform and validated by crash tests and real-world safety results.

Last month, social media user Shane Barrett shared how the IONIQ 5 protected his 18-month-old twins in a rear-end crash, posting photos of the damaged rear alongside intact car seats and noting he would buy another IONIQ. The IONIQ 5 earned the Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) rating from the IIHS in March crash tests, one of 14 Hyundai Motor Group models to receive the award this year.

Hyundai says the EV is engineered to distribute impact energy in frontal crashes, while in rear impacts, the rear member deforms in a controlled way to absorb shock. Reinforced hot-stamped steel in the lower members prevents safety zone deformation and protects the battery.
