CHINA JUST CROSSED THE 50% MARK—HALF OF ALL NEW CARS NOW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS OR EVS

China's new-vehicle market is undergoing a rapid transformation, with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) now accounting for more than half of all sales. This structural shift indicates that by 2030, the overwhelming majority of new cars sold in China could be electrified.

CleanTechnica, a leading electric vehicle news outlet, reported on Sunday that plug-in vehicles accounted for a staggering 54% of new car sales in China from January to November 2025. Pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) alone made up 33% of total sales during the same period.

In just a few years, China has dramatically boosted its plug-in vehicle market share from 20% to over 50%, showcasing the explosive growth of its EV sector. However, the absence of prominent EV policies in the country's recent five-year plan has raised questions about the sustainability of this growth trajectory.

Industry analysts frequently point to Norway's EV adoption curve as a reference point. Norway took four years to expand its plug-in vehicle share from 50% to 90%. Given China's current momentum, experts project that it could achieve near-total electrification of new car sales by 2030. As the domestic market approaches saturation, Chinese automakers are aggressively pursuing overseas expansion, a move that's likely to accelerate global EV adoption.

China's EV market is widely recognized as the world's most competitive and fastest-growing. Industry insiders see no immediate signs of a slowdown and remain confident that plug-in vehicles could reach a 90% share of new car sales in the coming years.

This trend is not only reshaping China's automotive landscape but also serves as a critical barometer for the pace of EV adoption in the global car market.
