The all-new, all-electric second generation of Porsche's Macan compact crossover is already on sale — but there may be another Macan model in the brand's pipeline. A new report suggests that Porsche could also be considering the creation of a new internal combustion Macan, in what would be a return to the original format used for the car's decade-long first generation.
According to Autocar, the possibility of another generation of ICE-powered Macan is being "reconsidered" as the brand discusses ways to address flagging electric car interest, highlighted by the falling sales of the Porsche Taycan in 2024. If such a car were built, it would co-exist alongside the electric Macan, just as the current Cayenne is expected to share dealership space with a separate Cayenne EV.
The news of a possible new Macan comes after Porsche's Oliver Blume confirmed in July that the larger Cayenne SUV would also continue as an internal combustion car into the 2030s. Porsche had already stepped back its initial plan to go 80% electric by 2030 by then, although the brand stated at the time that its 2030 goals would still be possible if customer interest shifted that heavily to electric options by the end of the decade.
A separate second Macan with internal combustion power would make plenty of business sense for Porsche, which sold over half a million of the small crossovers since it debuted in the mid-2010s. It would also allow the company to extend its current U.S. sales strategy of offering the older Macan next to its electric successor, something that the brand had previously planned to phase out in the near future. The existing internal combustion Macan is no longer sold in Europe due to new cybersecurity laws — but a new, compliant model could open up the same business opportunity in that market, too.
The last Macan was a particularly compelling car to drive, so a new internal combustion option would be welcome news for enthusiasts. Until then, buyers in search of a newer Porsche crossover than that outgoing car can either choose a gas-powered Cayenne or the impressive new Macan EV.
