VIDEO: RARE 1970 PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRD RESCUED AFTER 40 YEARS

This exceptionally rare 1970 Plymouth Superbird is getting a new lease on life after finding itself parked in storage for over 40 years. Despite its barn find condition, the muscle car’s new owner is determined to get it back on the road.

Plymouth made 1,935 of its “aero warrior” models for 1970 to keep up with NASCAR’s homologation rules. Only 135 examples received the range-topping 7.0-liter Hemi 426-cubic-inch V8, the engine that this now rescued Superbird rolled out of the factory with. Of 426 Hemi equipped aero warriors, just 77 had a three-speed automatic gearbox. So far, that makes this muscle car one of 77 made. Exactly how many were ordered in the B5 Blue finish is unknown.

The car retains its original sheet metal, and the exterior has been repainted once in its original color.  The black vinyl top is non-existent, but despite some surface rust the roof appears to be in repairable condition. The body is free of major rust. The interior, although gutted from the car, is reportedly still with it and is mostly original, including a bench seat.

Some Hemi powered Superbirds could fetch over $1 million in exceptional condition. This muscle car is a long way from that mark, but it has tons of potential, nonetheless. Its engine bay currently sits empty, but the car’s new owner has a warranty replacement block which reportedly came with it.

This Plymouth Superbird has been parked since the late-1970s or early-1980s and has changed hands quite a few times in its lifetime, but for the video it is sitting in a warehouse somewhere in Wisconsin.

The owner’s long-term plan is to give the Superbird a professional restoration, but for now he will be working to assemble the car, fix the drivetrain, and drive the Mopar as is. Watch as Ryan Brutt gives us a closer look and some history on the Superbird in this video posted just a few days ago on his YouTube channel, Auto Archaeology:
