IT’S BIGGER THAN THE PALISADE—MEET THE 746-MILE HYBRID SUV SHOCKING THE AUTO WORLD

Car lovers, take note—there’s a new SUV out of China turning heads for all the right reasons. It promises to end two of the biggest headaches for long-distance drivers: fuel costs and fatigue. Meet the Fangchengbao Bao 8, a full-size plug-in hybrid SUV with a jaw-dropping 1,200 km (746 mile) range. With dimensions that outmuscle the Hyundai Palisade and a design language that screams power, the Bao 8 is shaking up expectations of what a family SUV can do.

This isn’t just another efficient hauler—it’s a fuel-efficiency beast. Built on BYD’s cutting-edge DMO+ plug-in hybrid platform, the Bao 8 pairs a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors: 200 kW (268 hp) up front and 300 kW (402 hp) in the rear. Together they produce a wild 738 hp and 775 Nm (571 lb-ft) of torque. That means 0-to-62 mph in just 4.8 seconds—sports-car speed in an SUV body that can also drive 78 miles purely on electricity before switching to gas-assisted hybrid mode for that marathon 746-mile total range.

Beyond the specs, the Bao 8 is a giant on the road—204.5 inches long, longer even than the Palisade—and every inch of that space is used smartly. The cabin feels more like a tech lounge than a car interior, with a 12.3-inch digital cluster, a 17.3-inch center touchscreen, a 12.3-inch passenger display, and an enormous 50-inch augmented-reality head-up display. Add a built-in refrigerator and nearly 955 liters of cargo space that expands into a flat 74.7-inch in-car camping bed, and the Bao 8 starts to look like the ultimate road-trip companion.

Performance isn’t the only futuristic part. The top trim includes three roof-mounted LiDAR units and Huawei’s Qiankun Intelligent Driving system powered by ADS 4.0. That means self-parking, remote maneuvering, and genuine Level-3-plus autonomous capability—all wrapped in what the brand calls a “Future Starship Design.” The bold Lake Green and Snow Hidden Gray color options seal its high-tech vibe.

Starting between ¥379,000 and ¥399,800 (around $53,000–$56,000), the Bao 8 hits a sweet spot between premium and attainable. With its combination of brutal power, long-distance capability, and next-gen technology, it’s the kind of SUV that could lure both adventure seekers and efficiency enthusiasts.

The Fangchengbao Bao 8 is more than just another Chinese SUV—it’s a statement of intent. With supercar performance, ultra-long range, and luxury-class comfort, it shows how far Chinese automakers have come in redefining the balance between power and practicality. If it ever lands stateside, the Bao 8 could become a new obsession for anyone who believes the perfect SUV should conquer highways—and hearts—with equal force.
