THIS 30 MILES CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR-1 IS A SPORTS CAR COLLECTORS DREAM

The Chevrolet Corvette C4 ZR-1 is one of the most renowned examples of the American sports car in history. The C4 ZR-1 offered a big V8 engine under the hood, with development work from Lotus, and it became a big rival to the Ferrari Testarossa. Arguably one of the finest sports cars of the 1980s and 1990s. The C4 ZR-1 is now going up in value, and this nearly brand-new 1990 example on sale via Dupont Registry highlights that beautifully.

With not even 50 miles on the clock, this ZR-1 comes with plenty of original accessories including a ZR-1 coffee table book and the ZR-1 VHS cassette. The Chevrolet sports car is in incredible condition and could sell for over $100,000.

This Corvette ZR-1 Is Described As In Brand New Condition

Such is the newness of this Corvette ZR-1, Dupont says that it is still in its “original wrapper” and is a desirable example of the 1990 ZR-1 as it has no traction control. Under the hood of the car is a 5.7-liter DOHC 32-valve LT5 V8 engine, good enough for 375 hp. And good enough to propel the Corvette to a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds, and a top speed of 179 mph. A figure that still holds up well against more modern sports and performance cars.

That LT5 V8 engine had further development input from British sports car manufacturer Lotus. General Motors acquired the company in 1986. And it was the first time that Chevrolet had gone outside of GM to develop an engine. Thanks to their V8 experience with the Esprit, Lotus helped Chevrolet develop a fantastic powertrain. One which replaced the LT98 V8 engine under the hood of regular Corvettes. The LT5 was tuned even more from 1993 to 1995 and produced 405 hp in total, an increase of 30 hp over this 1990 model. What helped the LT5 be such a good engine was its unique air management system.

This worked by providing a wider power band, and would then shut off 8 of the 16 intake runners and fuel injectors when the V8 was running at part throttle. But this still enables the engine to produce its max 375 hp when it was at full throttle. Lotus then managed to give the engine two fuel injectors per cylinder, with one working at the lower end of the rpm scale with the other kicking in at 3,500 rpm. This allowed the LT5 to have strong performance across the whole RPM range.

The Corvette ZR-1 Comes With Its Original Window Sticker

As part of this sale, there are a wide array of original materials included with this Corvette. The original window sticker is an obvious highlight, with it visible in photographs of the C4 ZR-1. It even comes with its original hang tags alongside the sticker. The accessories are even more impressive, with the ZR-1 coming with its own coffee table book, a ZR-1 music sampler cassette, and a VHS player. A ZR-1 gold key ring and VIN-specific leather document holder round out the accessories the sports car comes with.

The condition of this car is also listed as brand new, with the C4 ZR-1 only completing 30 miles since it left the factory. The low mileage is evident in the overall condition of the car. The paintwork is as immaculate as you could ever want and all the ZR-1 logos across the car are as perfect as possible. The interior is just as exceptional, with absolutely no signs of wear and tear, just as you would hope from a car that has had virtually no use its entire life. Even the seats come with their original factory wrappers all over them, to protect them while moving around the factory and dealers.

The 1990 Corvette ZR-1 Was A Rival To The Ferrari Testarossa

When the ZR-1 made its debut in 1990, it took people's breath away. Here was an American sports car that could challenge the very best of what Europe had to offer. The ZR-1 felt more supercar than a sports car. And its performance allowed it to take the fight to the Ferrari Testarossa of the time. The Testarossa had a 4.9-liter Top F113 flat-12 under the hood, producing 385 hp while American versions hay less at 380 hp. The top speed of the Testarossa was nearly identical to the Corvette at 180 mph. But the 0-60 mph time was where the ZR-1 stood out with the Ferrari’s at 5.8 seconds.

The C4 ZR-1 also had the performance to take on the 964 Porsche 911 Turbo. A car that had a top speed of 174 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds, both slower than what the Chevrolet Corvette was able to do. The performance of the ZR-1 earned it the nickname “The King”. And it would go on to break a 50-year-old 24-hour endurance speed record, averaging a top speed of 175.885 hp.

C4 Corvette ZR-1s Are Slowly Increasing In Value

Currently, the C4 ZR-1 listed on Dupont has an asking price of $119,950. While that is an outlier due to the car's incredible condition and low miles, prices of the C4 ZR-1 have been shooting up over the last year or two. Looking at Classic.com, they have got the average price listed at just under $35k at $34,959. The top sale of any C4 ZR-1 was $101,000 back in 2022, with a 211-mile 1991 Corvette ZR-1. The Dupont Registry car is set to break that auction record.

Classic.com and its sales tracker have a plethora of C4 ZR-1s that have sold for high prices. And their market benchmark for the car stands at $38,056 with it trending up at the moment. The uptick in the value of the C4 ZR-1 is highlighting how much more highly rated the sports car has become. It still remains one of the fastest Corvettes ever produced. Even with the Corvette C8 and C8 Z06 recently taking the limelight. But the C4 ZR-1 was also a part of the generation of Corvette that really began to put the model on the map, with it setting the blueprint for today's editions.

Enthusiasts label the C4 Corvette as the first of the “Corvettes of Now”, with Chevrolet introducing a striking new design to replace the C3. The Corvette now looked much more like the European counterparts that it now viewed as its main rivals.

The C4 ZR-1 Was A Driver’s Corvette With Manual Transmission

This Corvette also sports the manual six-speed transmission that helped make the model such a driver’s car. Computer-aided gear selection is a novel feature of the C4 ZR-1. One which forces the driver to shift from first to fourth under low-power urban driving conditions. The manual allowed the Corvette to become a gearhead's dream, and this lucrative example will be no exception. Dupont Registry says that the Corvette C4 ZR-1 is an undervalued collectible, but this one is certainly going for the price it is worth.
