The middle-of-the-line trim is simply called the Land Cruiser. This seems like the purest version of the new Land Cruiser and is, essentially, how Toyota intends the new SUV to be enjoyed. It offers the best balance of equipment and comfort. A premium package can also be equipped that adds some luxury features such as an improved sound system, a heads-up display, and more.

While each trim level offers a unique experience, the bones of every 2024 Land Cruiser are the same. At the heart of every Land Cruiser is the new i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. This powertrain is always matted to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system.

The Land Cruiser retains its off-road heritage with a ton of equipment that makes it incredibly capable, regardless of which trim level you choose. It has 8.7 inches of ground clearance as standard, and even the base 1958 model comes with top-of-the line off-roading technology and equipment.

There is no dearth of off-roading SUVs in the market today, and here are the ones that come with hybrid powertrains.

The Entry Level 1958 Model Features Rugged Practicality

The simplest and cheapest iteration of the Land Cruiser is the 1958 model. Cheap is relative, though, and it still comes in above $55,000. However, even in its base form, the Land Cruiser comes stacked with equipment that will help you tackle any trail.

Capability

The Land Cruiser is built for the off-road in all forms. The 1958 model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels with 245/70 all-season tires. This means it can achieve an approach angle of 30°, a breakover angle of 25°, and a departure angle of 22°. This isn’t quite as good as competitors like the Jeep Wrangler, but it is still fairly impressive.

Toyota has also equipped every Land Cruiser with the basics of any off-road vehicle, such as full-time four-wheel drive and a rear-locking differential. It also comes with a CRAWL function, which essentially operates as a low-speed, off-road version of cruise control. LED fog lights are also standard.

Key Features

Toyota aims to play into the legacy of the Land Cruiser with the 2024 model year, paying homage to its origins while at the same time offering modern amenities. The “TOYOTA” heritage grille is a big example of this. The round LED headlamps are as well, mimicking the original Land Cruiser.

An eight-inch infotainment screen is standard in the 1958 model, offering things like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The seats are fabric and manually adjustable, but the front seats come heated as standard. A heated steering wheel and a six-speaker audio system are also standard. All Land Cruisers also come with a 2,400W AC inverter.

The Middle Tier Trim Offers The Best Balance Of Features And Price

The middle-of-the-road model is simply dubbed the Land Cruiser. From what we can tell, it's because this is the standard model. The 1958 offers a more accessible model with a few compromises here and there and the First Edition is a limited-run model. The basic model is the Land Cruiser as it's intended to be enjoyed.

Capability

The new Land Cruiser features a ton of equipment. This middle-tier model has had a ton of upgrades over the 1958. It also has 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, but its tires are slightly bigger at 265/70. This increases the approach angle of the Land Cruiser up to 31°. Bigger 20-inch wheels equipped with 265/60 all-terrain tires are optional on this model.

On top of the equipment on the 1958 model, the Land Cruiser features a front stabilizer bar disconnect. Multi-terrain select is an additional feature that adjusts settings to control wheelspin on different terrains, such as mud, sand, and dirt. A multi-terrain monitor is also a new feature, it displays a feed of the terrain on the infotainment screen, allowing you to see any potential obstacles.

TopSpeed's William Clavey has driven the new Land Cruiser and hails it for its great mix of retro elements and its modern capability.

Key Features

As opposed to the round LED headlamps on the 1958 model, the Land Cruiser features rectangular headlamps. Its RIGID fog lamps are an improvement over the base model and are color-selectable.

The middle-tier Land Cruiser trim features a bigger infotainment screen over the 1958 model at 12.3 inches. It also comes with an upgraded ten-speaker sound system for better audio clarity. The seats are SofTex instead of basic fabric and are heated and ventilated. The front seats are also power-operated instead of manual. It retains all the other equipment offered on the 1958 model.

A Limited Production First Edition Celebrates The New Land Cruiser

Alongside the entry-level model and the Land Cruiser Grade model, the First Edition is a limited-run special edition that celebrates the launch of the new Land Cruiser. It offers all the capabilities of the regular Land Cruiser as well as some unique features. The comfort and the luxury in the First Edition really highlight the differences between the Land Cruiser and Toyota's other mid-size off-roader, the 4Runner.

Capability

The First Edition Land Cruiser is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to capability. There are a bunch of standard features on this model that are optional extras on the regular Land Cruiser, but you can’t option the First Edition with the desirable all-terrain tires. Instead, it features the same wheels and tires standard on the regular Land Cruiser.

As well as all the equipment offered on the Land Cruiser grade model, the First Edition adds a roof rack, rock rails, and a front skid plate for added protection. It also comes standard with mud flaps and a back door guard. These features can all be had on the Land Cruiser grade, but are optional extras.

Key Features

The First Edition has some unique aspects to it, such as a stitched key glove. It also ditches the square headlamps and follows the 1958’s lead with round headlamps. The First Edition comes standard with a tailgate light, which can help with loading and unloading equipment in the dark.

In terms of interior equipment, the First Edition is nearly identical to the Land Cruiser grade. The main difference is that the seats are leather as standard. The first edition and the Land Cruiser grade can be equipped with a premium package which adds lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, a moonroof, a heads-up display, and a digital rearview mirror. All-in-all, we’re not sure that the First Edition is really worth the premium that you pay.
