NEW AUDI RS 5 AVANT SPIED RIPPING AROUND THE NRBURGRING AHEAD OF REVEAL

Earlier this year, Audi unveiled the all-new A5 lineup. While it uses existing nomenclature, the A5 takes over from the combustion-powered A4 lineup. So far, only the base models and S5 have been revealed. Now, we're getting another look at the range-topping RS5, spied here in Avant guise.

While the design is concealed by camouflage, it's plain to see the high-performance wagon will sport wider arches (particularly at the rear). This looks good and adds a hint of menace, but more importantly, it accommodates a wider track, which provides greater stability and grip under fast driving.

Camouflage Can't Conceal Aggressive Bodywork

The front fascia sports the new honeycomb grille, which is broader and flatter than before. We can also see a deeper front bumper and more pronounced vents. Along the sides of the vehicle, we can see sportier side skirts, although they're not as bold as the items you'd find on, say, a BMW M3 Touring - which may come to America, as it happens.

2025 Audi Q5 Raises The Bar For Luxury SUVs

The third generation of the Audi Q5 has finally been revealed with powerful engines, fancy lights, and the promise of even better ride.

Round back, the rear fascia doesn't appear much different compared to the standard A5 Avant. However, there's a prominent diffuser that also accommodates a pair of oval exhaust tips. The black-colored wheels make it difficult to see the design, but we're guessing the RS 5 will receive model-specific alloys. Seeing as the new RS Q8 is available with lightweight wheels, we would expect the RS 5 would also be offered with similar options.

Outgoing V6 Likely To Remain, With Electrification (Perhaps)

It's much too early to know anything about the engine, but the RS 5 Avant is expected to retain the turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 that powers the outgoing RS5 and RS4 Avant. In the current configuration, this sonorous-sounding motor produces 444 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. With the latest A5 models, Audi has introduced mild-hybrid technology. The RS 5's V6 may also benefit from MHEV tech, boosting power and improving efficiency.

Audi Has Fixed Our Biggest Problem With Modern EV Design

The Audi A6 e-tron shows off the side of modern EV design we want to see.

There's no word on when the new RS5 will make its debut, but we expect the range-topper to make a debut sometime in 2025. While the Avant is shown here, we expect the Sportback model to also receive an RS5 variant. As for the RS4, that nameplate is likely to live on, albeit with the 'e-tron' suffix. That's because the A4 is set to become the all-electric alternative to the A5. However, the new A4 line is only expected to arrive in 2025. It remains to be seen whether the RS5 Avant will make its way to America, as the RS4 wasn't offered here (despite the pleas of fans). At the very least, the Sportback will likely be available in the USA.
